Tri-Counties Celebrate Anticipated Full Allocation for the Klamath Project
KLAMATH COUNTY, OR and SISKIYOU AND MODOC COUNTIES, CA (Tri-Counties) - The counties of Klamath, Oregon and Modoc and Siskiyou, California (the Tri-Counties) are thrilled to share that the Bureau of Reclamation (Bureau) has announced an anticipated full allocation from Upper Klamath Lake to meet the needs of the Klamath Project. This would mark the first year of meeting all irrigation demand since 2019, and we want to express our deepest appreciation for this commitment to our agricultural communities.
Irrigation water demand for the area varies based on soil and weather conditions, ranging to about 400,000 in some years. The Tri-Counties recognize and applaud the Bureau and the Department of the Interior for acknowledging that we are in a time of abundance, with more than enough water available to meet the needs of irrigators, and the greater Klamath Watershed. This balanced approach ensures that resources are distributed where they are needed most, reinforcing the stability of our region and its many industries.
"This full allocation is a huge boost for our agricultural communities and wildlife. We appreciate the Bureau of Reclamation for recognizing the importance of water to our irrigators, and the Klamath Project. This decision restores hope and reinforces that agriculture matters. We look forward to continuing this partnership." Said Michael Kobseff, Siskiyou County Supervisor.
We are especially grateful for the announcement being provided earlier in the season, allowing farmers and ranchers the time they need to plan effectively. This foresight is key to successful crop management, livestock care, and overall economic strength.
A full allocation means more than just water in irrigation canals and ditches—it means security, stability, and the capacity for our communities to thrive. Water is the lifeblood of the Klamath Project, and today, we celebrate the commitment to ensuring it continues to flow where it is needed most.
To the Bureau of Reclamation, Department of the Interior, and all who supported this effort, we thank you. We look forward to continuing to work together.
